Typhoid Fever – Gauteng, South Africa

Communicated by: ProMED-EAFR

The City of Tshwane has raised concerns over the increase in typhoid cases reported in Bronkhorspruit and Hammanskraal.

Preliminary test results have not yet determined the source of the contamination. The metro said it is working closely with the Department of Water and Sanitation as well as the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) to determine the cause of the outbreak.

Tshwane’s spokesperson, Lindela Mashigo, has urged residents to avoid using untreated water as a precautionary measure.

“The city would like to appeal to communities to refrain from using untreated river or borehole water for domestic purposes, as a precautionary measure. Only piped municipal water that has been properly treated and tested should be used for drinking and cooking.”
